Lets talk mental health, folks! It’s a topic that’s been surfacing in the news more and more, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic. Whether you’re a parent, grandparent or just a concerned human, it’s clear that more young people today need greater levels of support than ever when it comes to their mental wellbeing.
Here’s a shocker: As of 2022, one in six kids aged 7-16 have a diagnosable mental health issue. That’s up from one in nine in 2017 and one in ten in 2004, according to data compiled by the NHS. It’s widely acknowledged that early intervention is crucial to stop these issues from snowballing into adulthood. Unfortunately however, the demand for help far exceeds the capacity of existing services, leaving many young people unable to access the support they need, particularly on entry level.
Enter Headway! We’re on a mission to support children and young people who are at the start of their mental health journey. We believe that early intervention and support are critical to prevent the need for more intense services down the line.
But…we’re not just about mental health support. We’re also passionate about helping young people develop essential life skills and improve their overall wellbeing. Whether it’s anxiety, confidence, communication, or presentation skills, we’ve got their back and, support extends to key points in a young person’s life as they progress through school too! We offer tutoring services to help boost subject knowledge and help kids on the move from primary to secondary school, even onto the next steps of college, 6th form or university. Additionally, our Irlen Syndrome screening services can be a game-changer in helping identify negative physical symptoms brought about when reading which can often heavily impact on academic progress and even classroom behaviour!
Our approach is simple: using a person-centred approach, we provide a non-judgmental ear and unconditional positive regard to those in need. We offer 1:1 support that’s truly bespoke, tailored to individual’s unique needs. These corner stones to our approach allow for a strong and effective working relationship to develop whilst also offering a calming and non-directive environment for young people to open up about their thoughts, feelings, concerns and experiences or to develop skills at their own pace.
And we don’t just limit ourselves to private 1:1 support; we also work with a growing number of schools to provide a range of social, emotional, and mental health support and promote strategies for positive wellbeing, as well as covering a host of everyday school concerns including exam anxiety, workload, behaviour and friendships. From arts and crafts to cooking and sports, we use engaging activities to help young people feel at ease and get involved in their sessions, making it easier to share any concerns or take more from their time accessing the service.
At Headway, we care deeply about supporting children, young people, parents, and schools alike. Our aim is to improve wellbeing, offer guidance, and develop all-important life skills through our bespoke mentoring and coaching services. And now, we’re proud to offer our services to children and young people in Wakefield from our new space in Ossett!
No concern is too big or too small. If you know a child or young person who needs a little support, get in touch with us today and let’s make a difference together.
