Our Year 2024 is a year-long project which will bring events and activities to every resident across the Wakefield District. With communities at its heart, this year will inspire creativity and is your chance to try something new.
We’ve kicked off the year with a bang and have even more fun family-friendly activities coming up in February and March that you won’t want to miss!
Here are our Top 10 highlights:
16 – 18 February 2024
Wakefield’s celebration of its most famous vegetable, the Rhubarb Festival, returns to paint the city pink for three days. Families will love the variety of workshops, entertainment, and fringe activities available from our partners including face painting, food workshops and crafts.

The much-loved fairy tale, but not quite as you know it…Join Opera North for a fun, family-friendly magical adventure where fate and love triumph over all. Led by a cast of professional opera singers and musicians this is an interactive and relaxed concert where singing and movement are encouraged.

Enjoy a playful morning with your little ones and join specialist early years artists to explore The Hepworth Wakefield. Discover artworks, architecture and the changing seasons through play, singing, movement, drawing and sensory activities.

Join Anglers Country Park to build your very own birdbox to take home. Come spring you might even see the chicks as they start to fledge!
12 – 16 February 2024
Learn about the local chocolate factory which made a billion After Eights each year and marvel at the glass canes filled with real sweets. Explore the many confectionary connections in Castleford Museum’s displays and use this tasty inspiration to design your own chocolate box and mini glass cane.

Illusion food didn’t just start on The Great British Bake Off, we’ve been making tricks out of tasty treats for centuries. From medieval feasts to Tudor banquets, people have made food look like something else to amaze and delight. Discover illusion foods that might have been served at Pontefract Castle and shape and paint your own sugar treats to fool your friends and family!

This workshop is a family-friendly creative session with the opportunity to paint your own patterns onto cloth using natural plant-based inks and dyes, whilst taking inspiration from the surroundings of the Mills in Colour textiles exhibition.

84/85 – The Longest Year is a yearlong exhibition and programme of events, held at the National Coal Mining Museum for England. Opening on 6 March 2024 to mark the 40th anniversary of the Miners’ Strike, this exhibition will consider the strike-through memories and stories of miners and their families.

Join the West Yorkshire History Centre for a day of family-friendly craft activities linked to their current exhibition, The Medieval Magnified. Learn about natural dyes and pigments, see the oldest document in our care (nearly 900 years old!) and make a medieval coin purse.
