We all know that being a parent is the best and hardest job in the world. But sometimes that hardest thing is to not see your children every day. Lee turned his life around to become the devoted Dad his children deserve and now he helps other single Dads to do the same.
I became a Single Dad in 2011, unfortunately, the day was coming for a while, but that didn’t make it any easier. We had the beautiful house, a dog, good job, and of course our precious daughter, life should have been perfect, but it wasn’t.
I was single for a number of years, spending time with friends who went home with their partners, as I headed back alone. Attempting dating sites because I didn’t know how to go out and chat someone up in a bar, feeling lonely.
Seeing my daughter less and less didn’t help things. Going from being able to have her from Friday nights to Tuesdays, to just weekends, to even less because of her school and then her Mum moving 2+ hours away.
Life didn’t seem to be improving…
Then I stumbled across someone online, he first got my attention with a gym training video. Nothing new there, I’d watched many of those, but I felt some connection, something different about him.
After learning more, I travelled across to Canada to join one of his seminars, it was apparent he went deeper than just teaching people to build muscle, he wanted them to become better men.
“Stop focussing on finding someone, focus on you, and then the right person will come into your life.”
This was a piece of advice his Mum had told him, he passed down to me, and it resonated immensely.
I’d spent too long just carrying on with life, hoping to meet someone, now it was time to focus on myself.
Since that day my eyes got opened wider and wider into the workings of the world, and how little impact I was having.
Nothing comes easy in life, I didn’t suddenly come back from Canada a better person.
It would have been great to start lots of new habits, read lots of books, keep going to seminars, but something was stopping me…
TIME
We don’t have endless hours free, most of us struggle with finding a spare 5 minutes. This is what forced me to set habits that work within my life, rather than hoping for the day I’ll have more.
Along my journey I created The Devoted Dad Project.
We help busy Single Dads feel part of a family again, with 5 minute daily disciplines to increase energy, confidence and motivation in our Dad’s Online Community.
I didn’t magic extra time up from anywhere, if anything I’ve got even less now, but how much my life has changed is night and day.
If I hadn’t seen that 1 YouTube video, I see myself still being that lonely Single Dad, either struggling to find someone or if I did, still stuck in my old unfulfilling life where I’d just be hoping things to be better.
Whereas now, I help Dads all around the country, helping them fit daily disciplines into their lives, and to no longer feel weighed down by time.
I’ve just recently celebrated the birth of my son Elias, just over 8 years since my daughter Alexis. I’m back to having the beautiful home, a dog, Alexis, and now Elias to treasure with my partner Beth.
Beth blew me away with how she took to Alexis, this is one of my favourite memories of them running along Whitby beach.
There’s been many since then, and I know they’ll be many to come.
Life is different now, busier, but more amazing than ever.
There are lots of moments that set us on a certain path in life, I’m now aiming to reach as many Single Dads as I can to guide them on theirs.
