With so many parks to choose from for a picnic in Wakefield, it can be hard to be decisive on the day and get up and go. So here at Wakefield Mumbler, we have put together our TOP 5 PLACES FOR A PICNIC IN WAKEFIELD.
We often park at Pugneys Country Park and walk up the hill to Sandal Castle (or there is a small carpark at the castle). The big walk gets them appetites going. Once you’ve reached the picnic benches, you are truly ready to devour your sandwiches.
Our Favourite part of Sandal Castle is the views. You can see so much of Wakefield. If you remember to take some binoculars, you can try spotting your house?
The recent works to Sandal Castle now means you can explore the ruins closely, learn about the castles past on the history boards. There are often free exhibitions and activities going on at the castle. Keep an eye out on the Wakefield Mumbler Facebook page for events across Wakefield.
Here at Wakefield Mumbler we love Coxley Woods. We live quite close to Coxley Woods, but we would still be regular visitors if we lived further afield. Coxley Woods really does have it all. Trees to climb and hide around. A stream perfect for paddling in wellies. Animals to spot. A perfect outdoor adventure for the whole family.
Check out our post on Coxley Woods to see a map of our favourite walking routes. There are so many spots perfect for a picnic, from the bottom of a stone quarry, right next to the little stream or under the cover of trees. Coxley Woods really is one of our favourite places for a picnic in Wakefield.
Perfect for a picnic if you’re looking for somewhere in the East of Wakefield. With so many wide and generally flat path ways, this nature park is great for the whole family including those bringing along buggies, bikes, wheel chairs and hiking carriers.
We love Walton Colliery Nature Park because of its amazing accessibility. The bigger kids can cycle ahead on the pathways while us parents chase after them breathlessly. There are picnic benches dotted around the park. Take a blanket and you can stop almost anywhere to enjoy your sandwiches.
