Having found that my activity levels had greatly decreased towards the back end of pregnancy, due to the combined pressures of work, childcare and pelvic girdle pain, once I’d given birth to my little boy, I was eagerly counting down the days until my six week check-up, when I’d be allowed to join exercise groups again!
I’d spent a long time researching different groups online whilst pregnant, and chose Sweaty Mama, as I liked the idea of being able to take my child along, and still get a good work out
On my first class, Katie (my instructor), was incredibly welcoming, and I was pleased to see the other mums there weren’t all “gym bunnies” and were a range of shapes and sizes. My biggest worry was walking into a class where everyone was clearly fitter and in better shape than me. There were a few other ladies who joined the same time as me, who had little ones of a similar age, so we were all in the same boat, which was nice.
The class was similar to an aerobics class in terms of the workout, but with the added bonus that when my little boy woke up, I could pick him up and cuddle him whilst continuing to exercise. For each track, Katie demonstrated the moves we were going to do first, showing different levels of intensity depending on your fitness and also what to do if you were holding a child. What I found helpful was that a lot of the moves we did as a warm up were then repeated in the harder tracks, so I felt like I knew what I was doing. As well as cardio tracks, there were ones for working on your core. This meant the class felt like it was giving me a good all round work out, rather than just getting my heart rate up.
Although at the time I felt like I probably wasn’t putting as much effort in as I could have done, the aches in my muscles the following day let me know that I’d definitely done more exercise than I had in a while. As my husband pointed out, it was the first time I’d properly exercised in about nine months, so I shouldn’t have expected to be able to go at the same rate as pre-pregnancy and not feel any aches the next day! I thoroughly enjoyed the class and can’t wait to go back.
