10 Free or Low Cost Activities and Events in and around Wakefield this October Half Term for Families 2021
Keeping the mini Mumblers happy and entertained over the October half term doesn’t need to break the bank with these fun, FREE or low-cost activities and events in and around Wakefield.

Back for its 2nd year, WordFest will be celebrating words and will be encouraging young people and families to explore their creativity through the theme combating climate change and looking after our planet!!
There will be online virtual events, fun family events and community library activities & experiences, all promoting the message: ‘Make Words Count’. The events will cover music, theatre, poetry, digital, spoken and written word. The festival will end with a spectacular exhibition at WX (the former Market Hall) during October half term week.

2. Wakefield’s Story Trail Walks
There are four story trails now around Wakefield, which involve a bit of activity to encourage children to do the walks! My absolute favourite is the Gnome Roam, which is a 1.8 mile walk through the beautiful forest at Newmillerdam to find the Gnomes. At each gnome you have to do a little activity! Another popular choice is the Room on the Broom Trail at Anglers, where sculptures and models are based on the popular story. To learn more about the other story trail walks click HERE.
3. Kids crafts at Frickley Country Park
Join the Frickley Park Ranger team to make scary Halloween crafts 27th October, 10:30am – 12:30pm. A morning of fun craft activities aimed at children around 5 years to 12 years old who need to be accompanied by an adult.

4. WX Events
The former Market Hall will again be transformed this half term with a pop-up exhibition, art installation and immersive experience! Families will be able to enter three major biomes of our planet; The Ocean Zone, The Enchanted Forest Zone and The Air Zone with theatre, music and film!

5. Halloween Hauntings at Temple Newsam
Discover the blue lady and the ghostly residents of Home Farm and Temple Newsam House during the spooky week of Halloween half term. Hear terrifying tales about the history of the estate and the ghosts and ghouls who creep through the corridors in the dead of night!
Also join us for pumpkin carving in the Walled Garden on 27 October from 1-3pm. No need to book ahead, just drop in.

6. Half Term @ Pit: Revealing the Invisible
This October half term come and reveal the invisible with activities that unearth the hidden mysteries beneath our feet. Look forward to craft activities, shadow puppet shows, live science experiments and even torch lit trails.

8. Haunted Halloween Hunt at Kirkstall Abbey
Join Kirkstall Abbey this October half term for their Haunted Halloween Hunt!
The family trail (no need to book) will take you around our ruined medieval abbey and along the way you will find plenty of creepy creatures, spooky statues and peculiar props.
Not too spooky so suitable for all the family!

9. Spooktacular Scarecrow Trail at Anglers
Join Anglers Country Park for a Spooktacular Scarecrow Trail. Purchase an activity sheet from the Visitor Centre then head down the Woodland Trail and see how many scarecrows you can spot! Figure out the secret code to win your treat from the Visitor Centre! Afterwards, join us for autumn craft activities in the Visitor Centre!
