If you fancy a day out over the summer holidays 2021 we have listed our ‘Top Ten’ ideas within an hours drive of Wakefield. Most require pre-booking this summer, so make sure you plan ahead!

Diggerland is the perfect place to go for an action packed family day out this summer. Experience the variety of rides and drives on offer – whether it’s testing your driving skills on a Dumper Truck, hanging tight on the world famous Spindizzy ride, or hooking a duck using the controls of a digger all whilst sitting in the cab, there really is something for all ages!

Stockeld Park is nature’s playground, where nothing is quite as it seems! With magical surprises at every turn, this is a place to spark even the wildest of imaginations! The Park is home to an Enchanted Forest, adventure playgrounds galore, go karts and outdoor inflatables AND this summer the dinosaurs are back at Stockeld park for a Jurassic event like no other! They also have a new Jurassic mini-golf as well as lots of dinosaur-themed events.

Plan a day out to Lotherton and become a summer explorer for a day! All summer holidays the estate will be open for outdoor fun on the two playgrounds, animal spotting in Wildlife World, museum wanderings in the hall and picnics in the gardens. Outdoors you will find a lovely new trail of willow sculptures, along with plenty of areas for the kids to let off steam in the playgrounds and woodland. At Wildlife World you can visit the new Nocturnal House to see bats, a kinkajou, Gaston the armadillo and a pair of giant cloud rats.

Grab your bucket and spade and head to the National Coal Mining Museum, where we’ll be giving you a taste of how miners spent their summer holidays with changing weekly themes! Get digging at the beach, discover the history of Gala Day, get hands-on with our pop-up crafts and even challenge yourself to do one of our trails. Then let off some steam in our Adventure Playground.

National Coal Mining Museum, New Road, Overton, WF4 4RH.
Discover a magical wonderland in the ancient forest at Mother Shipton’s this Summer! Jump down the rabbit hole for a fabulous adventure trail with intricate scenes inspired by the classic children’s stories Alice in Wonderland and Alice through the Looking Glass.
There’s something for all ages; go wild in the Adventure Playground, see what curiosities are hanging from the Petrifying Well, make a wish in the Wishing Well, and step inside the cave where Mother Shipton was born.
Hop along to Grass Hoppers Indoor & Outdoor Play at Tong Garden Centre for a proper playtime. Have a bounce on the jumping pillows, zoom down the zip wire, glide down the slides, explore our giant fort, drive around the race tracks and much more!
Grass Hoppers is set in a secure environment with outdoor seating, although we welcome picnics, we still have our delicious selection of hot food available.
Head to Temple Newsam Estate for the summer school holidays and make a full day of it with a trip to the house and farm.
Follow the Faith Hardwick trail through Temple Newsam House, finding objects along the way and unlocking the secrets of the historical mansion. Get up close to rare breed animals at Home Farm and explore the cobbled streets and outbuildings. Enjoy the two large playgrounds and lots of outdoor space including stunning spots by the lakeside, perfect for family picnics.
